Standard Life Insurance
A wide range of products, and worth using as a benchmark before approaching other companies.
Website: Standard Life Insurance
The Standard Life insurance range is extremely comprehensive, and the company remains one of the best performers in investment-based life and pensions products. However, the actual Standard Life insurance pages are a little on the sketchy side - so while the health insurance pages provide detailed quotations and online applications the Standard Life insurance pages offer a cover calculator but ask you to call to make an application. That's no doubt because Standard Life Insurance's Simply Life product is actually offered via another firm, AEGON Scottish Equitable.
As you'd expect from something called Simply Life, the Standard Life insurance offering is nice and straightforward. You can choose two kinds of cover: Level, where the insured amount remains steady for the duration of the policy, or Reducing Life Insurance, where the amount decreases over time. This latter option is usually used to protect a repayment mortgage.
The benefits to a Standard Life insurance policy include terminal illness benefit, competitive rates, single or joint cover and guaranteed premiums. However, to keep things simple Standard Life insurance has also simplified its application process to concentrate on a very specific customer group: customers "in good health" aged 49 or younger. If you don't fit those criteria then Standard Life Insurance suggests you call anyway, as the firm has "access to other plans that may meet your needs."
If you do qualify, then the application process for Standard Life Insurance's Simply Life product is, well, simple. According to the firm you'll be asked just nine core questions; after that you'll be given a decision there and then.
