Barclays Life Insurance
Easy online application for term policies; but a tied-agent philosophy for other products.
Website: Barclays Life Insurance
Barclays life insurance includes term policies which are hived out to Aviva; they also offer a whole of life product, but unless you’re a Barclays customer and entitled to specific benefits, you may find an IFA gets you a better deal.
The Barclays Life insurance range includes both term assurance (standard and decreasing) and whole-of-life cover; but in quite different ways. For whole-of-life cover, you will be required to set up an appointment with your local Barclays planning manager- note that he’s tied to the bank, and isn’t an independent adviser. Not surprisingly, there’s not much more information online to guide you- they’d prefer to meet you face to face and begin the selling process.
If it’s term cover you’re after, Barclays life insurance business is handled by Aviva. The Aviva operation is simple, clear and concise (unlike the Barclays site, which takes ages to navigate), and through Aviva, getting a Barclays life insurance quote is a doddle- and can be done online.
The principle is simple- your life quote, like many on the market, includes terminal illness cover (that’s not the same as critical illness cover- please check if you’re not sure of the difference) and the only bolt-on is a waiver-of-premium option in case of unemployment. The policy can be taken out from between two and 40 years, and usually cannot last beyond your 70th birthday, although there are exceptions. Interestingly, there appeared to be no questions about medical history in the online application- which may sound great, but may also mean premiums are nominally higher for everyone, to account for this.
