Sainsburys Travel Insurance offers online savings of 15% for Nectar card holders, and its Basics package promises to cut prices even further. We found that prices were competitive rather than incredible, and we're not sure Basics is cheap enough to justify cutting cover. The firm offers single, multi-trip and extended travel insurance, and you can add winter sports, golf cover and Independent Traveller insurance.

Sainsburys Travel Insurance has won several awards for its travel insurance, and its website is quick, simple and friendly. If you've got a Nectar card you'll be able to get a 15% online discount, and the Basics package can cut the cost of cover by a further £5 or so.

The site offers single, multi-trip and extended trip travel insurance, and you can add golf or winter sports cover. If you're on a tight budget you can choose the Basics package, which reduces most forms of cover - so for example legal advice and expenses cover drops from £25,000 to £15,000. If you've booked your own itinerary you can also choose Independent Traveller cover, which provides similar protection to package deals booked via travel agents.

So does Sainsburys Travel Insurance deliver big savings? It can do: opting for the Basics package drops the price of our single traveller's insurance from £20.22 to £15.98, and our family cover drops from £32.31 to £25.54. Before plumping for the cheaper option, though, it's a good idea to compare the cover: is it really worth cutting cover by thousands of pounds in order to save five pounds?
