Direct Line Travel Insurance comes from an old hand at insurance sales, and promises serious discounts: according to the blurb, you can expect savings of up to 50% on travel agents' premiums. However, the site is a pain in the neck to use and asks for lots of details before giving you any prices.

There are three types of policy to choose from: single, annual and "discovery", which is designed for extended stays and backpacking holidays. Winter sports cover is also available, and you can select this option once you've received a standard quote.

While Direct Line Travel Insurance promises big savings on high street prices, it's not particularly competitive compared to other online insurers: our single traveller was quoted £21.87 and our family £45.14.
