Single Trip Travel Insurance

If you don't think you'll be doing much travelling in the near future, then single trip travel insurance is likely to be the best and cheapest option. It's available everywhere – from cheap brokers such as Columbus Direct to big names including the Post Office – and can be exceptionally cheap. Expect to pay £10-£15 for two weeks' travel in Europe for a single person, or £40-£50 for a family.

One key advantage of single trip travel insurance is that you're not paying for insurance you won't need: it's daft to shell out on an annual policy if you're only going away for a fortnight. However, it's important to compare policies for different insurers carefully: for example, some of the cheapest quotes don't include cover for your personal belongings and won't compensate you for delays.

If you're shopping for single trip travel insurance for a family trip, it pays to shop around: while infants are insured free by most firms, the age of children varies: with some, anyone over 16 is considered an adult and will cost more to insure; with others, you can insure the kids until they're 23. Similarly, check the cover details carefully and make sure your chosen policy includes the cover you need. In many cases you'll find the cheapest option isn't always the best one.
