SAGA Travel Insurance is strictly for over-50s and you can't order multi-trip insurance online – although you can get cover for a snowboarding holiday. The site makes you register before you can get a quote, which means the procedure is unnecessarily time-consuming, and prices are steep.

SAGA Travel Insurance offers cover to over-50s only, and promises big discounts. Before you can get a quote you need to answer a few questions about recent hospital visits, illnesses and so on; after that the quote form itself is in large print and broken up into a single screen per question. It's far more inquisitive than most sites: instead of brief travel details, you need to enter your postcode and register as a user of the site before you can find out if the prices are worth looking at. The site tends to crash, too.

Once you've negotiated the sign-up procedure you'll be asked for a few details of your trip, and then given a quote for single-trip insurance. For now, SAGA won't quote online for multi-trip insurance (for that, you'll need to phone) but you can get a quote for winter sports insurance. Although the policy holder must be over 50, you can insure children under the age of 16.

Despite the promised discounts, SAGA Travel Insurance is pricey: £23.99 for our solo traveller, and a whopping £67.18 for our family.
