Nationwide home insurance offers the usual buildings, contents and optional accidental damage insurance, and there are discounts available if you increase your voluntary excess or have an approved alarm fitted. Premiums are reasonable although there doesn't seem to be an option to pay annually instead of monthly.

Our suburban family was quoted £195.48 for £35,000 of contents and £85,000 of buildings insurance, while our urban couple were quoted £282.94 for £35,000 of contents cover.

The site is very up-front about exclusions to Nationwide home insurance policies, and it makes it very clear that if world war three breaks out and a plane full of nuclear waste crashes into your house, breaking the TV, they won't replace it. Other than that there are no surprises, although there doesn't seem to be an option to pay annually: premiums are quoted as a monthly fee rather than a total amount.
