Lombard Direct are better known for loans, and their insurance policy was by no means the cheapest we could find. Furthermore, we found that e.g. reducing the voluntary excess or cancelling the no-claims discount protection didn’t help the premium much. There was also a “compulsory vehicle excess” which seemed to be arbitrarily applied. Again, this is a case of the devil being in the details.
The Lombard Direct car insurance site is relatively easy to use, although unpleasant on the eye. The quote system is fast, with not too many screens, and you are free to tweak your cover which is good. Unfortunately, you need to have your information to hand and type fast- if you don’t fill in the forms in ten minutes or so, you are logged out and have to start again, which is irritating.
Lombard are particularly tolerant- your quote is valid even if you have two convictions or three claims in the past three years, and they’ll cover drivers from 17 years and up (including a “pass plus” discount for new drivers); so this is probably good value for bad drivers. There’s also a 10% loyalty bonus if you have Lombard home insurance. Audio cover is a healthy £1000, and you can spread your payments, although that is at a whopping 18.9% APR.
