Home Insurance Quotes
To get our home insurance quotes we decided to get insurance for two very different properties: a city centre flat owned by a twentysomething couple, and a detached house outside the city owned by a family of four. Our couple needed contents insurance only; our family, buildings and contents. Where insurers had automatic levels of cover we went for that; otherwise, we asked for £15,000 of contents insurance for our couple and £35,000 for our family. We valued our family's home at £100,000.
The results were interesting. Our couple couldn't get home insurance quotes from several different firms including Egg, Halifax and Zurich; in most cases, the reason was that the sites wouldn't quote for flats. Our family fared better, but there were big differences in prices: the lowest premium was £128 from AXA, while other insurers hovered around the £200-plus mark.
The biggest variations were in the home insurance quotes for our urban couple. Most were around the £300 mark but Legal & General wanted more than £600; by comparison, 1stQuote offered £35,000 of contents insurance for just over £80.
It was surprising how many firms wouldn't give us home insurance quotes at all: Swinton was the worst culprit, with a site that didn't just omit an online quote form but that also didn't tell you a single thing about its home insurance, but many big-name firms – and high street banks in particular – haven't got the hang of online ordering yet. It's a shame because phoning around is a pain in the neck, and these insurers are likely to lose business to their more Net-savvy competitors.
