Direct Line home insurance comes from one of the first firms to cut out the middleman and sell insurance direct to the public, and as you'd expect the prices are competitive and the quotation process is as painless as possible. Direct Line Home Insurance quoted £204.75 for our city couple for £19,700 of contents insurance, and £224.70 for our suburban family.

The usual disclaimers apply – you need to confirm that you're not a crazed arsonist and that your house isn't underwater – and excesses are the standard £50 voluntary with a £25 compulsory excess for accidental damage. Be careful, though: while computer equipment is covered, its value must not exceed £1,000.
