Home contents rising in value

As people across the UK fill their homes with hi-tech gadgets, the rise in the value of people's home contents is set to increase by 60 per cent in the next ten years.

esure.com has shown that pensioners in particular will see a rise in value, with a massive 400 per cent increase predicted for the over 65's.

Middle-aged couples with children have been identified as the biggest spenders, splashing out on goods such as DVD players and household appliances like washing machines.

Homeowners are thus being urged to keep their household inventories up to date to avoid being under-insured and potentially being left out of pocket should something happen.

Nikki Sellers, head of home insurance at esure.com, said: "As the list of must-have gadgets lengthens, the value of what’s inside all our homes is rising fast. And in this age of minaturisation, it’s important for expensive gizmos to be tucked away."

He concluded: "The danger is for homeowners to overlook these items when estimating the value of their contents - which could leave them under-insured and vulnerable if a burglar does strike."
