More Than warns singletons over home insurance

More Than has warned single people to make sure their home is adequately insured, following new statistics that show only a third of one person households' contents have insurance.

Average total contents in one person households are worth £19,284, More Than says, and single person households will make up a third of the total number of UK households by 2021.

Calling the problem an "insurance time-bomb", More Than has said that the £38.1 billion worth of contents uninsured in 2001 could jump to £48.2 billion by 2021 if people do not take action soon.

David Pitt, head of insurance at More Than, commented: "The More Than Home Contents Index shows that nearly a third of Britons are now living alone, but despite owning more high value items than ever before, this group are not covering their contents against potential loss.

"People are marrying later and with divorce rates on the increase, the problem of single people without adequate insurance could snowball."

Items without insurance could include high tech gadgets, DVD players, CD collections and expensive clothing.
