Discount Home Insurance
If you're looking for discount home insurance, it pays to plan ahead: if your current premiums are on the high side, fitting an approved alarm together with British Standard-approved door and window locks can make a big difference to your premium.
That's not the only type of discount you can expect, though: simply going online can save you between 5 and 10% of your premium, and anything that makes you a lower risk is likely to attract some sort of discount. Most insurers offer discounts to the over-50s and some, such as Cornhill Direct, offer further discounts for over-60s.
As with car insurance, you can usually get a no claims discount too: the amount varies, but you can expect anything upwards of a 15% discount if you've previously had insurance and you've been claim-free for 3 or more years.
Another type of discount to look for is a combined discount: insurers that do both contents and buildings insurance often give you a 5% or 10% discount if you buy both types of insurance from them, while others – notably Co-operative Insurance – have a sliding scale of discounts: buy contents and buildings and get 5% off; add caravan insurance and get a further discount; purchase holiday insurance as well, and the discount gets higher still. As a result, it's worth thinking about all your insurance, not just your home: by insuring your car and your home through the same firm, you could end up with both discount car insurance and discount home insurance.
