Cheapest Life Assurance
Life assurance usually has an investment value, and therefore performance is as important as price.
To assess the cheapest life assurance, don’t go on price alone. Life cover including an investment element should also be assessed on the projected investment value, and (with endowments) there’s a surrender value too. You might also get a tax benefit. Even if you know what product is right for your needs, you need to consider all these issues to understand a policy’s true value.
Getting the cheapest life assurance is one of the most complicated questions in financial services marketing, because these products are so varied- indeed if you’re renewing you probably can’t get the same product you bought five years ago.
To get the cheapest life assurance quote, you need to shop around for the best value product without leaving yourself exposed (i.e. under-insuring yourself). If it suits your needs, for example, you might accept a non-profit whole-of-life policy rather than a with-profits policy. This leaves you without the benefit of bonuses, but the premiums will be cheaper and you’ll still know what you’re going to get at the end of the day.
But there are other issues to consider too: lots of them! The cheapest life assurance quote might not be the best: for tax purposes “qualifying” policies offer tax breaks- you should ensure that you get the best tax deal from the policy you sign up for. The level of insurance can influence your tax position too.
And if you’re using a unitised (or other investment vehicle) for life cover, be aware that it is of course an investment, and therefore has intrinsic value. Rather than just looking for the cheapest life insurance deal, be sure to look at past performance to see which life offices have consistently performed well in delivering good increases in value; not only for the purposes of policy maturity but also to protect the surrender value of the policy should your circumstances change and you need to sell it.
