Cheap health insurance
The changing face of the health insurance market
Until recently there was no such thing as cheap health insurance: private medical care was a perk that only the well-off (and people with high-flying jobs in giant companies) could afford. However, the health insurance market has become very competitive and it's now possible to get health insurance without paying a fortune.
Cheap health insurance didn't exist in the UK until very recently: such insurance was very expensive, and it was seen as an expensive luxury. However, in recent years the market has changed considerably because of two things: more competition, and long waiting lists.
Competition always brings down prices, and the huge number of firms in the healthcare market means that cheap health insurance is the rule rather than the exception. For routine medical bills it's possible to take out a cash plan for a few pounds per week, while even the most comprehensive health insurance is available for a reasonable premium.
