Abbey Life Insurance
A comprehensive protection scheme for growing families from Abbey, the new name for Abbey National.
Website: Abbey Life Insurance
The Abbey Life insurance offering is distinctly odd- it’s actually a critical illness policy designed specifically around families (for whom it’s probably quite good value)- but if you want life cover alone, it will actually cost you more, so singletons might prefer to look elsewhere..
Abbey is the new name for Abbey National. Oddly enough, there’s technically no such thing as Abbey Life Insurance- at least, you can’t buy life insurance from Abbey by itself (actually you can, but daftly, it’s more expensive…). What they do offer is something called the Protection plan. This is another bit of clever marketing jargon- as their website says, when you take out the protection plan, Abbey life insurance comes free. Basically, the plan is a (pretty good) critical illness policy, which includes demise too.
What is impressive is the flexibility of the product. It includes up to £20,000 of cover for children, and if one partner in a family should claim, the remaining partner can begin a single-person policy in their name with no further medical examination (this is a form of renewable policy). Unlike some plans (especially some supermarket offerings) you can protect your premiums against unemployment for a small fee.
The Abbey Life Insurance critical illness component is fairly comprehensive (a list of 30 ailments are admissible- less impressive policies offer 25 or less); the only downside is that you cannot apply online- your options are either by phone or by popping into a branch.
